Suggested Response:
• The changes announced to the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit reflect the ongoing nature of our government’s response to COVID-19. Seasonal workers, including those in our seafood sector, will now have financial support during this difficult time.
• The Canada Emergency Response Benefit provides workers with $500 per week for up to sixteen weeks if they have ceased working for reasons relating to COVID-19. This includes employees, contract workers, and people who are self-employed.
• The benefit is available to workers who have lost their jobs, been laid-off, or had their hours reduced for reasons relating to COVID-19.
• It is also available to workers who are sick or in isolation with COVID-19, are caring for those who are sick or in isolation, or are caring for children or other dependents.
• Seasonal workers – including self-employed fish harvesters – are also eligible for the benefit if they are unable to start working for reasons relating to COVID-19 and have exhausted their employment benefit regular or fishing benefits.
• Workers are able to continue to earn up to $1,000 from employment or self-employment while receiving CERB benefits.
• Through this benefit, and the other initiatives we are taking, we will ensure that every Canadian, including the hard-working women and men of our fisheries, has the support they need right now.
