Issue/Question:

2022-23 Departmental Plan

Suggested Response:

Our government continues to work with Indigenous peoples and all Canadians to grow Canada’s blue economy in ways that protect, regenerate, and restore our coastal habitats and fish stocks.

The 2022-23 Departmental Plan is based on our mandate commitments and our four core responsibilities: fisheries, aquatic ecosystems, marine navigation, and marine operations and response.

Each of these responsibilities calls for science-based decision-making, advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, and the work of the Canadian Coast Guard.

Key Priorities
DFO is making significant strides to manage the long-term health of our oceans through unprecedented investments in marine protected areas, a blue economy strategy for sustainable growth, changes to the Fisheries Act, as well as a generational investment in the protection and restoration of Pacific salmon.

Additionally, DFO will be working to protect and restore our oceans and coasts through the Coastal Restoration Fund, an expanded Ghost Gear Program, the next phase of the Oceans Protection Plan as well as the renewal of the Canadian Coast Guard fleet.

Spending
The decrease in planned spending of $1,114M from 2021-22 to 2022-23 is primarily related to planned changes in the funding profile as projects near and/or meet their completion, such as changes to Indigenous programs, CCG fleet renewal, supports for fish harvesters affected by COVID-19, and Oceans Protection Plan.
