What did the Department achieve in 2021-22?

Suggested Response:

I’m proud of my department’s achievements in 2021 22 on conserving marine and coastal areas, supporting Indigenous communities, the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative, the Ghost Gear Fund, the Oceans Protection Plan, the development of a plan for open-net pen aquaculture in B.C., the renewal of the Coast Guard fleet, and supporting fish harvesters through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background:

• Overall, the Department demonstrated resilience despite the pandemic and generally performed well against the plans and targets identified in the 2021-22 Departmental Plan. Fifty-two per cent of the performance targets for 2021-22 were achieved. The remaining targets were either not met (32%) or did not have data available at the time of reporting (16%).
• The Department's total actual spending for 2021-22 was $3,758.9 million. This represents an increase of 12.3 per cent compared to the total actual spending for 2020-21 ($3,347.0 million).
• The Department's total authorities for 2021-22 were $5,098.7 million. The Department’s actual spending for 2021-22 was $3,758.9 million.

Additional Information:

• The Department spent 12.3% more in 2021-22 than in 2020-21. This is mainly attributed to spending on Indigenous programs and the Canadian Coast Guard fleet renewal programs.
