Issue/Question:
With the resumption of travel, Service Canada (SC) is experiencing an increase in passport applications. Canadians are requesting expedited services in order to get their passports quickly. Due to processing delays, file transfers between passport sites have also increased.
Suggested Response:
• Service Canada is facing a growing demand for passport services.
• Canadians can obtain expedited passport services in under 10 days for an additional fee. (under 2 days $110, 2-9 days $50)
• File transfers to a specialized passport site are available for a $45 fee if a Canadian sent their application by mail and require their passport quicker than service standards.
• Additional fees will not be charged for expedited services or a file transfer due to delays caused by the Passport Program and are not the fault of the client.
Background:
The Canadian Passport Program operates under a revolving fund that is generated by fees for passport services charged to the public. The revolving fund allows for the accumulation and carryover of surplus revenues from year-to-year to offset future shortfalls.
Through the Passport Revolving Fund, the operations of the Passport Program are financed entirely from the fees charged for passports.
Effective July 2, 2013, the accountability for the Passport Program became the responsibility of Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Beginning in July 2013, Canadians were given a choice between a five-year validity passport and a ten-year validity passport ($120 for a five-year and $160 for a ten-year).
