Issue/Question:

“SC provision of services to First Nations and Inuit people who speak a language other than French or English”

Suggested Response:

• Service Canada continues to provide support communities through the Service Canada Centres in Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay in which employees provide services in indigenous languages.
• Furthermore, the Outreach Support Centre (OSC), has received 630 calls from Nunavut and provided 734 service offerings in fiscal year 2021-2022. The Telephone Interpretation Services (TIS) is available for clients who need translation services.
• The Western Territories Region has started reactivation of Scheduled Outreach sites; to date Baker Lake reactivated on August 15th, additional sites will reactivate dependant on the readiness of the communities.

Background:

• Telephone Interpretation Service (TIS) connects the Service Canada employee and the client with an interpreter to facilitate service and is available in over 100 languages, including: Arabic, Cantonese, Farsi, Hindi, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tamil, Vietnamese and Swahili plus the following Indigenous languages: Cree, Inuktitut, Oji-Cree and Ojibway.
• Multi-Language Services (MLS), where a Service Canada employee who speaks a native language is available in Nunavut to three Service Canada Centres; the following languages are provided: Inuktitut, Paallirmiutut, and Inuinnaqtun.

Additional Information:

• Virtual outreach services are available to all 25 Nunavut communities. Every community has access to the Outreach Support Centre (OSC), a telephone service, which provides the same level of service as received in a Service Canada Centre. The OSC can utilize Telephone Interpretive Service (TIS) if needed for interpretation services.
