Issue/Question:
How will a “Single Sign-In Portal for government services” work, and how does it benefit Canadians?
Suggested Response:
• Canadians use over 60 different systems to access more than 200 government services online, each with its own username and password. The Government of Canada is changing that through the development of a single sign-in portal.
• A single sign-in portal will make access easier, reduce red tape, and enhance digital service offerings alongside in-person and phone channels while reducing duplicative investment and effort.
• The use of an online service channel will remain voluntary and will not replace existing in-person, mail, or telephone-based services.
• Most importantly, it will be built with strong features for privacy and security because Canadians deserve both convenience and confidence when dealing with their government.
Background:
The Government of Canada is committed to establishing a modern and secure approach to enable individuals and businesses to quickly and easily sign in and verify their identities to obtain federal services.
In December 2024, the Government of Canada procured a Customer Identity and Access Management software service so that the Canadian Digital Service (within Service Canada) can configure the software and offer GC Sign-in, the single sign-in portal that federal departments and agencies can integrate with to deliver digital services. Over time, GC Sign-in will replace legacy sign-in systems.
By consolidating fragmented sign-in systems within the Government of Canada, maintenance and integration costs will be significantly reduced, cybersecurity consistency will be improved, and new digital services requiring sign-in can be implemented faster. This approach mirrors other enterprise approaches where standardized platforms have enabled faster delivery, better support, and more cost-effective scalability.
