Why is the Government conducting a legislative review of the Canada Infrastructure Bank Act?
Suggested Response:
The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) Act, which established the Canada Infrastructure Bank, came into force on June 22, 2017.
Under the CIB Act, the Minister must undertake a review of the provisions and operation of the Act every five years, beginning on the day on which the Act came into force.
As of June 2022, the Government has initiated work for the review and plans for consultations and reporting on this work are under consideration.
As per the Act, the Minister will table before Parliament a copy of the report of the review within one year after the review is undertaken.
Background:
The CIB Act requires the Minister to undertake a review of the provisions and operations of the CIB Act every five years beginning on the day on which it came into force (i.e., with the first review covering the period of June 22, 2017 to June 22, 2022).
The review must be initiated by the Minister; once commenced a report on the findings of the review must be tabled before Parliament one year from the day the review was undertaken and this report must be reviewed subsequently by the relevant Parliamentary Committee.
