Issue/Question:

On February 2nd, 2017, the government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) launched the $75 M Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program.

Suggested Response:

  • The Government of Canada is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and moving towards a low carbon green economy.

  • The Federation of Canadian Municipalities is delivering the Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program, which is helping municipalities of all sizes by providing funding, training and resources to help adapt to the impacts of climate change and reduce GHG emissions.

  • To date, more than 300 projects have been approved under the Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program.

Background:

  • The Government of Canada has committed funding to support municipal capacity to respond to climate change. The Municipal Climate Innovation Program supports climate change adaptation projects as well as capital projects that mitigate climate change risks or reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  • This new funding will ensure key actions can be taken by municipalities to support sustainable investments as well as identify and act on opportunities for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

  • A collaborative approach with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) leverages the FCM’s expertise, reach of partners across the country and relationship with municipalities to deliver the funding.

  • This fund supports projects that include plans and studies that mitigate climate change risks or reduce GHG reduction. Also eligible are projects that support a better understanding of climate change risks through the collection of data and planning on probabilities and impacts.

  • The fund provides an opportunity to enhance climate change resilience at the local level.

  • Indigenous communities that operate legally as a municipal or regional government are eligible, as are indigenous communities that have a shared service agreement with a municipality related to infrastructure, climate change mitigation or adaptation. First Nations on reserve are also eligible if they have a shared service agreement with a neighboring municipality.
