Suggested Response:

• The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that the Stoney Nakoda First Nation is safe and secure and that they receive appropriate emergency management supports following a fire at the water treatment plant.

• Indigenous Services Canada is committed to implementing a comprehensive and community-led approach to emergency management on-reserve.

• Indigenous Services Canada remains in close contact with First Nation leadership to ensure the community receives the support it needs, which includes ensuring that water is available in the community.

Background:

On the morning of Tuesday, November 29th, a fire was reported to have impacted two structures within Eden Valley a community of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation which is located west of Calgary. One affected structure is the water treatment plant.
Indigenous Services Canada would like to acknowledge the community and individuals affected and was relieved to learn that there were no fatalities associated with the fire.
As the water treatment plant is impacted, officials from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation and ISC are monitoring the situation to ensure that water will be available in the community.
The Director of Emergency Management for the Nation is on-site and assessing the impact to water delivery.
Water trucks from neighbouring communities are en-route with potable water for personal use.
Eden Valley has a population of approximately 644 residents and is part of Stoney Nakoda First Nation which is located approximately 78km from Calgary. Stoney Nakoda Nation has 5,397 members.
Bearspaw Band is served by Chief Darcy Dixon (November 25, 2022 to November 24, 2025). And the Council members are: Dacster Amos, Roderick Hunter, Keith Lefthand, Pierre Lefthand for the same term as Chief Dixon.

• Two structures, including a water treatment plant have been affected by fire. The fires have been extinguished.

• A boil water advisory has been issued and ISC is working with First Nation leadership to ensure a useable water source is available.

• Efforts are already underway to re-establish water access to the community.

• Water trucks from neighbouring communities are en-route with potable water for personal use.
