Suggested Response:
• Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG) is an emerging industry that holds the potential to reduce global GHG emissions and build a cleaner future.
• We are working to ensure that Canada becomes the world’s cleanest producer of LNG, and will continue to work with industry, provincial and territorial governments, and Indigenous communities to ensure its long-term competitiveness.
• The $40-billion LNG Canada project will create 10,000 jobs.
• It will also create billions of dollars in government revenues and hundreds of millions of dollars in construction contracts for Indigenous businesses.
• The LNG Canada facility and the provincially regulated Coastal GasLink pipeline touch the traditional territories of 22 First Nations, all of which have signed agreements with the proponents.
If pressed:
• The LNG Canada project will be the world’s cleanest large-scale LNG facility, in terms of GHG emissions intensity.
• The facility will supply natural gas to Asian countries, such as China, which still depends on coal for over 60% of its power generation needs. The coal displacement potential of Canadian LNG will support net reductions in global GHG emissions.
Background:
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is a critical transition fuel for countries seeking to move from higher emitting sources such as coal or diesel to cleaner sources. Canada is well-positioned to produce and supply LNG to global markets with 17 proposed projects on the East and West coasts - six have been approved, three are under review, and eight are being planned. One project, LNG Canada, is under construction after announcing a $40 billion investment for a major LNG export terminal in Kitimat, BC, in October 2018.
