Suggested Response:
• Since day one, our government has made getting our resources to market a top priority to support good, well-paying jobs in our energy sector.
• The completion of the Canadian portion of the Line 3 replacement project is both a tribute to the efforts of the hardworking Canadians in our energy sector, and a clear demonstration of how good projects can move forward when we work meaningfully with Indigenous peoples and take concrete action to protect the environment.
• The initial new capacity that is coming online will bring some much-needed relief for Canada’s energy sector.
• Once fully completed in the U.S., Line 3 will transport 760,000 barrels per day — over 370,000 new barrels per day in additional capacity — and further support workers in our energy sector.
• Our government will continue to advocate for the completion of Line 3 in the United States in 2020.
• We will also continue working to ensure the Trans Mountain expansion, which is under construction and employing thousands of Canadians, and Keystone XL, which we have always supported, continue to move forward in the right way.
Background:
On June 3, 2019, the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled that the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the section of Enbridge’s Line 3 Replacement Project in Minnesota is inadequate because it does not address the potential impact of an oil spill into the Lake Superior watershed. On October 1, 2019 the state’s Public Utilities Commission asked the state Commerce Department to conduct further analysis and report back within 60 days. Enbridge began shipping oil on the Canadian portion of the project on December 1, 2019, while awaiting regulatory approval to complete the US portion.
