Suggested Response:
• Our government is committed to working with all levels of government and industry to ensure the oil sands are developed in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
• Major resource projects can move forward, but only if done in a way that protects the environment and respects Indigenous rights.
• We invited the public and Indigenous groups to comment on the potential environmental assessment conditions for this project.
• We will consider consultations with Indigenous groups and comments received on the potential conditions prior to determining whether the project is allowed to proceed.
If pressed on a timeline extension:
• On July 25, 2019, the Joint Review Panel submitted its Report containing its conclusions, rationale and recommendations regarding the potential environmental effects of the proposed Frontier Oil Sands Mine Project to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change.
• The Minister has until February 28, 2020, to issue a decision statement for the project.
Background:
The largest proposed oil sands mine in Canada, Teck Resources’ Frontier Project, is undergoing an environmental assessment regulatory review. The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada held a comment period from October 25 to November 24, as part of the environmental assessment process. The public and Indigenous groups were invited to comment on the potential environmental assessment conditions for the project. The Minister of the Environment has until February 28, 2020, to issue a decision statement for the project.
