Suggested Response:
• The Government of Canada believes the US duties on Canadian softwood lumber are unfair and unwarranted.
• The longer this dispute drags on, the greater the risk to thousands of jobs on both sides of the border.
• Our government continues to press for a negotiated settlement. We believe an agreement is possible and in the best interests of both countries.
• We will continue to vigorously defend Canada’s vital forest sector in the face of US trade action and press for a negotiated agreement.
Background:
Canada’s softwood lumber trade dispute with the US is negatively impacting the forest sector’s competitiveness. The Government of Canada is supporting the forest sector through opportunities in innovation, clean technology and the bioeconomy, to create and sustain good jobs and to enhance the sector’s resilience and competitiveness.
