Issue/Question:

The Government of Canada is committed to implementing a hydrogen strategy that will lay the foundation for the country’s path to net-zero, while positioning Canada to be a supplier of choice to the growing global hydrogen market.

Suggested Response:

• To meet Canada’s net-zero goal, our economy will need to be powered by two equally important energy sources: electricity and low-carbon fuels.
• As the lowest carbon fuel, hydrogen is key to our energy future, unlocking economic and employment opportunities across the country.
• As a key pillar of our domestic energy transformation, hydrogen offers the most cost-effective, technically feasible solution to reducing emissions in many of Canada’s largest emitting sectors – freight, heavy industry and resource extraction.
• That is why we have been working with the private sector, governments at all levels, Indigenous communities, and academia to develop a hydrogen strategy for Canada.
• It will serve as a catalyst for investments and strategic partnerships. And make us a Top-3 producer of hydrogen.
• It will also reduce diesel dependency in Canada’s North, giving largely Indigenous, remote Northern communities access to clean energy.
• If pressed, supplementary:Canada is well-placed to become a supplier of choice for clean hydrogen and has the technologies and experience to use it. This can generate high-paying jobs and economic opportunities through exports, and help attract direct foreign investment into Canada.
• Across this country, from coast-to-coast-to-coast, there’s no reason why Canada can’t lead the way.
• We also have pace-setting clean tech companies that are well-positioned to help grow domestic production of hydrogen and facilitate its use across the economy.
• As other countries are developing strategies to build their domestic capacity and markets for hydrogen, our government understands that we need to act now in order to position Canada on the global market.
