Issue/Question:

Energy demand continues to rise and energy efficiency is a proven tool to reduce emissions while stimulating economic activity.

Suggested Response:

• Energy efficiency is the fastest and most inexpensive way to help build Canada’s energy future while meeting climate change commitments.
• In the Speech from the Throne, our government committed to creating thousands of jobs and cutting energy costs for Canadian families and businesses by retrofitting homes and buildings.
• This builds on the over $1 billion in new funding from Budget 2019 for energy efficiency that is already creating jobs and making energy more affordable for Canadians.
• Improving energy efficiency is also a way to reduce energy costs for Canadians, and reduce energy poverty for the most vulnerable households.
• It has already saved Canadians billions of dollars and employs more than 436,000 people across the country.
• Significantly reducing energy use in existing buildings tackles GHG emissions, creates good paying, local jobs and improves our competitiveness, all contributing to Canada’s economic recovery as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Canada will continue to play a leadership role globally by working collaboratively with international partners to increase energy efficiency and accelerate the clean energy transition.
• We will continue to work with provinces and territories to advance energy efficiency and meet emission-reduction targets through federal investments in municipalities, building retrofits, clean technologies, energy management programs for industry, and skills development and training.
