Question Period Note: World Energy Outlook

The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently released a sustainable recovery report in June 2020 analyzing the pandemic’s impacts on the global energy system. On October 13, 2020, it will release its annual publication of the World Energy Outlook (WEO), which will provide an update of energy demand and supply projections to 2040 based on different scenarios, taking into account the impacts of COVID-19 and the near-term actions that could accelerate the global clean energy transition.

• Our government is committed to innovation and to building a clean energy future to strengthen the economy, create good jobs and support the natural resource sectors.
• This is in line with the IEA’s recent Sustainable Recovery Report, which shows that it is possible to simultaneously spur economic growth, create millions of jobs and reduce emissions as we recover from this unprecedented pandemic.
• The IEA’s analysis of the pandemic’s impacts on the global energy system underscored that the world needs clean technologies and clean fuels to support recovery and meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
• It also highlighted the need to double-down on energy efficiency and renewables deployment.
• The IEA’s findings reflect Canada’s conviction that there is a path forward to a prosperous, low-carbon future and we are working with Canadians to build that future.

If pressed on Canada eliminating fossil fuels:
• The greatest challenge and opportunity of our generation is to help all Canadians – families, businesses and communities – see the value in a cleaner future.
• But while meeting global climate objectives will result in lower demand for fossil fuels, the world will continue to rely on oil and gas for the foreseeable future.
• And Canada is well-positioned to meet that continued demand as a clean and secure supplier.
