Issue/Question:

Native and invasive pests pose problems when their severity threatens forest health and productivity and affects commercial and ecological forest values. The Government of Canada is working to minimize the damage caused by forest pests such as the Spruce Budworm, Mountain Pine Beetle, and Emerald Ash Borer.

Suggested Response:

• The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that forests contribute to the well-being of all Canadians.
• We invest approximately $20 million annually in science to help Canadian forest managers and communities understand and monitor pests.
• We are developing responses to prevent and minimize the impact posed by damaging forest pests such as the Spruce Budworm, Mountain Pine Beetle, Emerald Ash Borer, and others.
• Our government’s ongoing scientific leadership and collaboration with provinces, territories, and municipalities have resulted in a number of key advances in knowledge and innovation to help slow the spread and mitigate the impacts of forest pests in Canada, and reduce the risk of future infestations.
