Issue/Question:
The 2022-23 Main Estimates were tabled in Parliament on March 1st, 2022.
Suggested Response:
• The 2022-23 Main Estimates total resources listed for the Department of Canadian Heritage is $2.2 billion of which $327.1 million is related to Sport programs.
• The 2022-23 Main Estimates for the Sport programs represent a net increase of $79.0 million from 2021-22 Main Estimates.
Background:
Notable changes in funding for initiatives under the Sport programs include:
• $47.3 million in funding for the Arts, Culture, Heritage and Sport Recovery Fund, and for the Reopening Fund for events and in-person experiences, which are leveraging the department’s existing programs to provide financial aid to organizations that are still struggling due to the pandemic while also helping Canada’s festivals, cultural and sport events, outdoor theatre performances and heritage celebrations deliver in-person experiences;
• $39.1 million in funding for Indigenous Reconciliation and Strength for Indigenous Women and Girls through Sport for Social Development and Community Sport for All, which ensures that Indigenous women and girls have access to meaningful sports activities, organized sport at the community level is supported for all Canadians and a response to the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls; and
• $6.1 million in reprofile from 2020-21 funds to 2022-23 for the Sport Hosting Program for the rescheduling of major events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The above increases are partially offset by the following decreases:
• $10.1 million for the sunset of time-limited funding for Gender Equality in Sports, whose purpose was to achieve gender equality in all facets of sport by 2035; and
• $3.6 million decrease of the 2022-23 funding profile to support Indigenous Youth and Sport.
