Issue/Question:
In June 2022, Vancouver and Toronto were selected to host the FIFA World Cup 2026, along with 14 other cities in the United States and Mexico.
Sport Canada is working with the Canadian Soccer Association, the host cities, their respective provinces and federal organizations to continue the development of plans and budgets for the event.
The Government of Canada will make decisions on funding and services in support of the event in due course.
Suggested Response:
• We are excited to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the official host regions of Vancouver and Toronto, as well as the host nations of Mexico and the United States.
• Once again, we will welcome the world through sport and showcase Canada as a leader on the world stage.
• We continue to work with Canadian parties and FIFA to refine plans, ensuring the investments made will leave lasting benefits for sport, Canadians and communities.
Background:
• In March 2018, the Government of Canada announced its support for a joint bid from Canada, the United States and Mexico (United 2026) for the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup 2026.
• Government of Canada support included federal assurances (letters) from the Prime Minister and multiple ministers which responded to FIFA-requested government guarantees.
• In June 2018, FIFA awarded the event to United 2026.
• The event will be organized by FIFA in conjunction with the 16 official host cities which were selected in June of 2022. Toronto and Vancouver were selected in Canada.
• The event is scheduled to take place in June and July 2026. It will be the biggest FIFA World Cup to date, including competing teams from 48 countries and is anticipated to attract over one million international visitors to Canada.
• In March 2023, FIFA announced the expansion of the tournament from 80 to 104 matches. FIFA is expected to announce the allocation of matches to host cities by December 2023. It is expected that Canada could host between 11 and 14 matches.
• The Government of Canada has contributed up to $3.6 million in funding to Canada Soccer to coordinate the work of Canadian governments and develop a national hosting concept for the event.
• The National Hosting Concept, including Business Plans from the host regions, will be finalized in September 2023 and will inform recommendations to federal decision-makers this fall.
• As per the Federal Policy for Hosting International Sport Events, the Government of Canada will limit its contribution to a maximum of 35 percent of total event costs and will not exceed 50 percent of the total contribution of all orders of government to the event.
