Suggested Response:

• The Government has adopted a more rigorous approach to Governor in Council (GIC) appointments.

• This approach is open, transparent and merit-based, while achieving gender parity and reflecting Canada’s diversity.

• The Government fills positions as provided by legislation.

Background:

CANADIAN RACE RELATIONS FOUNDATION (CRRF)
As per the Canadian Race Relations Foundation Act, the Minister responsible for the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) is the member of the King’s Privy Council for Canada designated as the Minister for the purposes of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act. Therefore, the CRRF and its 13 Governor in Council appointed positions fall under the responsibility of the Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities. These positions include one full-time Executive Director and 12 part-time Board Members (Chairperson and 11 Directors).

CANADA’S SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE ON COMBATTING ISLAMOPHOBIA

On January 26, 2023, the Prime Minister announced the appointment of Amira Elghawaby as the Canada’s first Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia. She was appointed by the Governor in Council for a four year term effective February 20, 2023.
