Issue/Question:

In response to an increase of reports of maltreatment and the concerns raised by victims and survivors through two Parliamentary studies, the Government of Canada announced the creation of the Future of Sport in Canada Commission. The Commission will engage and seek input from the sport community and develop recommendations for the Government of Canada to improve safety in sport and the sport system in Canada.

Suggested Response:

The Government of Canada remains committed to promoting safe, welcoming, and inclusive sport environments that are free from maltreatment.

To support this commitment, the Future of Sport Commission in Canada is undertaking an independent and forward-looking review of sport in Canada.

Through this process, which will be trauma-informed and human rights-based, the Commission will develop recommendations to improve safety in sport and the sport system in Canada.

In May 2024, it was announced that the Commission will be led by Justice Lise Maisonneuve as Commissioner and
Noni Classen and Dr. Andrew Pipe as Special Advisors.

Over 18 months, the Commission will engage and seek input from the sport community, including survivors and victims of maltreatment in sport.
