Background:

Sport Canada has been engaging with the Federal Anti-Racism Secretariat and the 2SLGBTQI+ Secretariat, prior to embarking on a series of consultations, to support the development of an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.

In September and October 2020, the Minister of Canadian Heritage and the Parliamentary Secretary for Canadian Heritage (Sport) held a series of roundtable discussions on sport on the following topics: Advancing Equity and Anti-Racism in the cultural, heritage and sport sectors; Indigenous Sport; Diversity Discussion on Women and 2SLGBTQI+; Recreational Sport; and High Performance sport.

Through Budget 2021, the Government committed
$80 million over two years, starting in 2022-23, to support community-based organizations to deliver organized sport projects for equity-seeking groups, in particular, Black, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQI+, and newcomers to Canada.

In October 2022, the Government of Canada announced renewed funding of $25.3 million over three years for gender equity in sport. Funding will also be used to support activities that expand efforts to include other demographic groups that are underrepresented in sport including Black and racialized Canadians, 2SLGBTQI+ people, persons with a disability and newcomers to Canada.

In February 2024, the Minister of Sport and Physical Activity hosted a roundtable with Black leaders in the sport system to discuss diversity and inclusion in Canadian sport.
