Canada is proud to welcome the world in 2026 and host the FIFA Men’s World Cup alongside Mexico and the United States.

Our government is investing up to
$220 million in Canadian Host Cities, Toronto and Vancouver, and will provide essential services within federal jurisdiction to support the successful, safe and secure delivery of the event in Canada.

This is an opportunity to showcase Canada as a multicultural, inclusive, and welcoming country, while generating significant economic benefits and lasting legacies for Canadians and our communities.

Background:

In March 2018, the Government of Canada announced its support for a joint bid from Canada, the United States and Mexico (United 2026) for the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Men’s World Cup 2026.

Government of Canada support included federal assurances (letters) from the Prime Minister and multiple ministers which responded to FIFA-requested government guarantees.

In June 2018, FIFA awarded the event to United 2026.

The event will be organized by FIFA in conjunction with the
16 official host cities which were selected in June of 2022. Toronto and Vancouver were selected in Canada.

The event is scheduled from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with 48 countries competing in 104 matches. It will be the largest FIFA Men’s World Cup ever hosted and is anticipated to attract over one million international visitors to Canada.

In February 2024, FIFA announced the allocation of matches for each host city, with Canada hosting a total of 13 matches.

The Government of Canada contributed up to $3.6 million in funding to Canada Soccer between 2018 and 2023 to coordinate the work of Canadian governments and develop a national hosting concept for the event.

On April 30, 2024, Minister of Sport and Physical Activity,
Carla Qualtrough, announced that the Government of British Columbia would receive up to $115.66 million to support Vancouver in hosting seven matches.

On May 3, 2024, Minister Qualtrough announced that the City of Toronto would receive up to $104.34 million to host six matches.

The Government of Canada remains committed to delivering essential federal services within federal mandate and jurisdiction, and in line with the Ministerial letters that were provided as part of the bid in 2018.

Sport Canada will work with the host cities, provinces, and federal organizations to find opportunities to leverage the event domestically and internationally and to maximize benefits to Canadians.

The Government of Canada’s contribution to the event will be limited by the Federal Policy for Hosting International Sport Events.
