Issue/Question:

An article published on November 27, 2023, reports the Bloc Québécois official languages critic suggesting that the federal government has invested $2 billion to support English in Quebec since 1995, despite the decline of French in that province and in the country.

Suggested Response:

Our government is committed to protecting and promoting the French language across the country, including Quebec, while protecting the rights of English-speaking communities in that province.

The modernized Official Languages Act recognizes that French is a minority language in Canada and North America and creates an obligation for federal institutions to take concrete steps to protect and promote French across the country.

We have also created a new law, to be enacted by Order-in-Council, providing new rights to work and receive services in French in private companies under federal jurisdiction in Quebec and in regions with a strong francophone presence.
