Question Period Note: Protocol for Agreements in Education

Negotiations are underway to finalize the next Protocol for Agreements for Minority-Language Education and Second-Language Instruction 2024-2025 to 2027-2028 between the governments of Canada and the provinces and territories. The next Protocol will be the multilateral framework from which bilateral agreements will be negotiated with each of the provinces and territories.

For over 50 years, the Government of Canada has been working with provincial and territorial governments to provide financial support for minority-language education and second-language learning, while respecting each other's areas of jurisdiction.

The Action Plan for Official Languages 2023-2028 invested more than $500M in new funding over five years to support provincial and territorial education. This funding is in addition to the $383.5M already announced in Budget 2021.

We are actively working with our provincial and territorial partners to implement these additional investments, notably through a new Protocol of Agreement on education for the next four years.
