Issue/Question:
The Online Streaming Act: Google Sues the CRTC
Suggested Response:
The Online Streaming Act bolsters Canadian content and music on major streaming platforms operating in Canada, strengthening support for French language and official-language minority communities.
Background:
Bill C-11, the Online Streaming Act, received Royal Assent on April 27, 2023. On November 9, 2023, the Governor in Council issued policy directions to the CRTC to outline the Government's priorities relating to the implementation of the new legislation. The policy directions support important outcomes for Canadian audiences, creators, and broadcasters including: supporting Canadian creators and industry; advancing Indigenous storytelling; advancing diversity and inclusion; ensuring regulations are equitable, fair and flexible; redefining Canadian programs; and ensuring the exclusion from regulation of social media creators and their content, including podcasts.
