Issue/Question:
Diversity of Content Online Initiative
Suggested Response:
Access and exposure to a diversity of content online contributes towards a healthy democracy. This includes the availability of a diversity of sources, ideas, and perspectives; and a variety of content types or genres.
Background:
The Diversity of Content Online (DoCO) Initiative originated from growing concerns that citizens’ media diets are less diverse due to content being highly personalized and reflecting fewer, and more polarized, points of view as well as their increasing exposure to dis/misinformation on digital platforms. The powerful AI algorithmic tools (recommender systems) that digital platforms use to populate users’ news feeds and homepages play a role in fundamentally shaping public perspectives.
