Repatriation of Indigenous Cultural Belongings

Suggested Response:

The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of the repatriation of cultural belongings and ancestral remains for Indigenous communities in Canada.

Background:

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (the Act) received Royal Assent in 2021. The repatriation of Indigenous cultural belongings and ancestral remains contributes to the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP), in particular Articles 11 and 12.
