Suggested Response:

The Court Challenges Program recently acquired new legislative protection through C-13, the modernization of the Official Languages Act. Bill C-316 aims to further ensure the stability and continuity of the Program, such that a future government could not eliminate the Program without parliamentary debate.

Background:

Bill C-316, An Act to amend the Department of Canadian Heritage Act (Court Challenges Program), aims to enshrine the Court Challenges Program in law. It was introduced on March 6, 2023.
• The bill would require the Minister to establish and implement a program such as the CCP. This bill is sponsored by Liberal caucus member Ron McKinnon.
