Suggested Response:
Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited Ottawa on May 26 and 27, 2025. His Majesty The King delivered the Speech from the Throne on May 27 to open the 45th Parliament. Their Majesties also took the opportunity to meet with people and groups that reflect the country’s geographic and cultural richness.
Background:
Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited Ottawa on Monday, May 26 and Tuesday, May 27, 2025. The principal objective of the visit was for His Majesty King Charles III to deliver the Speech from the Throne on May 27, 2025, to open the 45th Parliament of Canada. The visit provided an opportunity to reaffirm Canada’s sovereignty as a constitutional monarchy, and to better understand the role of the Crown in our democracy. This has been The King’s first visit to Canada since his accession on September 8, 2022. it has otherwise been The King’s 20th visit, and The Queen’s 6th visit to Canada. The late Queen Elizabeth II delivered the Speech from the Throne twice during her reign: the first time in 1957, to open the 23rd Parliament, and again in 1977, to open the 3rd session of the 30th Parliament. The following elements constitute the highlights of the 2025 Royal Visit: May 26, 2025: ceremonial arrival at the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport; public engagement at Lansdowne Park; tree-planting ceremony at Rideau Hall; audiences with the Governor General and Prime Minister at Rideau Hall; reception with the provincial lieutenant-governors and the territorial commissioners. May 27, 2025: military parade and procession in a landau to the Senate of Canada building followed by full military honours and inspection of the guard; delivery of the Speech from the Throne at the Senate of Canada; wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; departure from the Ottawa airport. Opportunities for public engagement took place during the official arrival, the event at Lansdowne Park, and the tree-planting ceremony on. Canadians also had the opportunity to see Their Majesties on May 27 during the parade and procession in a landau to the Senate of Canada Building, the transition to the National War Memorial, and the wreath-laying ceremony. The leaders of the National Indigenous Organizations were present at the official arrival. There was also Indigenous representation at the Lansdowne event (Indigenous programming elements), during the reading of the Speech from the Throne (First Nations drumming, Métis fiddler, Qulliq with Inuk elder), and at the wreath-laying ceremony (RCMP Eagle Staff present). The previous official Royal Tour to Canada was by Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla in May 2022 (then as Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall), in the context of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II. Royal Visits and Royal Tours demonstrate the enduring ties between the Royal Family and Canadians and offer a unique opportunity to celebrate this important aspect of our shared heritage, culture and identity. The Department of Canadian Heritage is responsible for the overall management of official Royal Visits and Royal Tours and shares the responsibility for developing and executing a program with provincial and territorial governments, as the case may be. Final costs will be tabulated and available in due time
