Tourism in the Prairies
Suggested Response:
• The tourism sector in the Prairies and across Canada has been hit hard by the pandemic but is showing signs of recovery.
• The Government of Canada has been supporting this important sector throughout the pandemic by providing direct support to businesses and organizations via the Regional Relief and Recovery Fund (RRRF), Tourism Relief Fund (TRF) and the Major Festivals and Events Strategic Initiative (MFESI).
• PrairiesCan continues to support the recovery of the sector in the region through the delivery of the Tourism Relief Fund, providing over $73 million in funding across the Prairies, with 10% of funds designated for Indigenous tourism.
If pressed on supports for tourism:
• The Regional Relief and Recovery Fund (RRRF) has provided nearly $131 million in assistance in assistance to tourism operators and organizations.
• The Major Festivals and Events Strategic Initiative (MFESI) is providing $20 million in funding to support major events.
• The Tourism Relief Fund (TRF) is providing over $73 million in funding across the Prairies, with 10% of funds designated for Indigenous tourism.
• Under the TRF, Indigenous tourism projects are a priority, including from Indigenous sole proprietors, enabling PrairiesCan to support the growth of the Indigenous tourism sector across the Prairies.
