Issue/Question:

PrairiesCan's Accomplishments and Supports for Government Priorities

Suggested Response:

• Since August 2021, PrairiesCan has invested $1.4 billion in over 350 communities across the Prairies. Overall, our investments have contributed to the creation of more than 60,000 jobs and more than $4.2 billion in export sales growth.
• PrairiesCan is focused on supporting small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and communities across the Prairies as Canada transforms its economy.
• In response to the trade war, through the one-billion-dollar Canada-wide Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), PrairiesCan is supporting SMEs to be more productive, strengthen supply chains, and diversify markets.
• PrairiesCan’s recent funding under RTRI has supported:
o Repatriating manufacturing of stainless-steel storage products from the U.S. back to Manitoba.
o Expanding production of a Saskatchewan-based farm equipment manufacturer to strengthen its global competitiveness.
o Enhancing competitiveness of an Alberta-based seed company by adding a second pulse processing line to increase production and expand its product offering.

Background:

• To support development of Canada’s only northern trade corridor, PrairiesCan is investing $50 million over five years in the Indigenous-owned Port of Churchill and also working with the Major Projects Office.
• PrairiesCan has launched the Prairie Partnership Initiative to advance transformative projects that strengthen the Prairie economy by providing a single, collaborative mechanism for governments, Indigenous partners, industry, and communities.
o This includes working with 14 other federal departments and agencies through the Prairie Project Table to coordinate investments in impactful regional projects that create jobs, exports, and have the potential to become nation-building projects.

Additional Information:

• PrairiesCan is also strengthening the Prairie defence industrial base, by delivering the Regional Defence Investment Initiative that will invest $357.7 million across Canada to support businesses and regional ecosystems to integrate into defence supply chains.
