  • The Government of Canada is committed to strengthening Canada's transportation networks and needs reliable information to optimize decision-making and investments in this sector.
  • Through the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF), the Government of Canada is currently investing in projects that allow Canadian businesses to remain competitive in key global markets, improve the efficiency of their exchanges with international partners and create jobs for Canadians.
  • We are always open to supporting projects that bolster the efficient flow of goods and stimulate economic growth.
  • We are prepared to work with the Government of Quebec through the NTCF to advance the Smart Corridor project.

Background:

  • In 2017-2018, Transport Canada (TC) granted funding (nearly $150,000) to the St. Lawrence Economic Development Council (SODES). Phase 1 of the Smart Corridor project was co-funded by the Ministère des transports du Québec (MTQ).
  • This phase 1 was a pilot project which consisted of establishing collaboration agreements between Innovation Maritimes and the Canada Port Authorities along the St. Lawrence in order to establish data sharing, create trust between partners and develop a platform for the dissemination of data including traffic and performance indicators.

  • The project at the Port of Vancouver had also been funded for $500,000 through the Asia Pacific Gateway and Corridor Transportation Infrastructure Fund. The purpose of the project was to assess real-time supply chain performance information for rail freight traffic from and to the port of Vancouver.
  • The Port of Vancouver also received in July 2019 $ 6 million to extend the project and create a dashboard measuring in real time the performance of each stage of the supply chain for all goods passing through the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert.
