Canada’s role in the G7 Ministerial meeting on Gender Equality, October 13-14, 2022 in Berlin, Germany.

Suggested Response:

• Canada will participate in the upcoming G7 Ministerial meeting on Gender Equality from October 13 to 14, 2022 in Berlin, Germany. This meeting will be an opportunity for Canada to demonstrate leadership on gender equality issues with G7 partners. These issues are being prioritized by the G7 German presidency, which Canada wholeheartedly supports.

• We are pleased that there are Canadian experts in the G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council, which supports the G7 in integrating gender equality throughout its agenda.

• Canada’s interests will also be represented at the G7 meeting by key Canadian experts from civil society. The advice and recommendations from civil society is key to advancing gender issues within the G7.

BACKGROUND:

• Germany holds the 2022 G7 Presidency and is prioritizing gender in a variety of areas including care work, equal pay, increased participation of women in management and leadership positions, and for the rights and inclusion of LGBTI persons.

• Through the G7 Foreign & Development Track, Germany is seeking G7 commitments on development priorities including financing for gender equality and gender equality targets, unpaid care, women in conflict and displacement, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, and girls’ education. Germany has convened the Gender Equality Advisory Council (GEAC) and announced its membership, including Isabelle Hudon and Paulette Senior from Canada.

• WAGE’s role in the G7 includes representing Canada in the G7 Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Working Group.

• The main priority for the 2022 GEWE working group is the Dashboard on Gender Gaps. The Dashboard was originally proposed by the UK Presidency in 2021. In collaboration with G7 members, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) developed a dashboard on gender gaps to promote mutual accountability across the G7 by clearly and, where appropriate, publicly communicating progress made by the G7 and its partners in promoting gender equality.

• Germany has not yet circulated an agenda for the G7 Ministerial Meeting on Gender Equality.
