Suggested Response:
• The Government of Canada has committed to advancing gender equality, and the Departmental Results Report for 2019-20 highlights our achievements on this front.
• The 2019-20 fiscal year marks our first full year as a full federal department.
• Over the 2019-20 fiscal year, Women and Gender Equality Canada:
o Grew its historic support for women’s and equality-seeking organizations, providing more than $66 million in funding.
o Established a Commemoration Fund to honour the lives and legacies of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and LGBTQ2S individuals.
o Made historic investments of $20 million over three years to strengthen and grow LGBTQ2 organizations across Canada.
o Hosted the Women Deliver 2019 Conference, the world’s largest conference on gender equality and the health, rights and wellbeing of girls and women.
o Invested over $10M in research in order to strengthen the current evidence base on gender equality.
o Acted quickly to provide COVID-19 emergency response funding to over 1,000 women’s shelters, sexual assault centres, and organizations across the country providing supports to women and children experiencing violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since April 2020, nearly 800,000 women and children experiencing violence had a place to turn to because of this funding.
Background:
The Departmental Results Report is an annual requirement to communicate departmental results achieved in relation to organizational priorities and departmental expenditures and resources that were set out in the Departmental Plan, at the beginning of the fiscal year, to Parliament and to Canadians.
Over the reporting period, the Department has contributed to advancing gender equality by focusing on four priority areas: strategic action, support and investment to address systemic barriers to gender equality; promoting a greater understanding of the intersection of sex and gender with other identity factors; preventing and addressing Gender-Based Violence; and strategic engagement to advance gender equality in Canada.
Key highlights include:
o Investing a total of over $66 million in over 600 organizations across the country to address systemic barriers to advancing gender equality and providing $10 million to each of the Canadian Women’s Foundation, Community Foundations Canada and Grand Challenges Canada.
o Investing over $37 million in 367 new projects, including 108 projects to help communities and families honour the lives and legacies of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls; 192 projects to support the capacity of women’s and equality-seeking organizations; 4 projects to advance women’s economic security; and 8 projects to advance women in leadership.
o Launching a Commemoration Fund, in response to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls’ interim report. In total, 108 projects totalling more than $13 million over two years were announced in 2019, to support Indigenous governments and organizations to work with families, communities, and survivors to help honour the lives and legacies of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and LGBTQ2 individuals.
o Investing $50 million in 60 new projects to strengthen the Gender-Based Violence sector and improve supports and services for women and girls impacted by GBV.
o Investing close to $2 million in seven LGBTQ2 community organizations to help advance LGBTQ2 equality across Canada and launching a Call for Proposals in March 2020, for up to $18 million to support LGBTQ2 organizations across the country.
o Hosting the Women Deliver Conference in 2019-20 and announcing over $300,000 in funding in May 2019, for two initiatives supporting the Women Deliver 2019 Conference.
o Acting quickly towards putting into place agreements with Women’s Shelters Canada, the Canadian Women’s Foundation, and the Government of Quebec in order to distribute COVID-19 emergency response funding to over 1,000 women’s shelters, sexual assault centres, and organizations across the country providing supports to women and children experiencing violence.
