Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada 2018 - 2019
As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019.
Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.
Mandate:
ISED helps Canadian businesses grow, innovate and expand so they can create good-quality jobs and wealth for Canadians. It also supports science research and the integration of scientific considerations into investment and policy choices. The Department helps small businesses grow through trade and innovation and promotes increased tourism in Canada. The Department also works to position Canada as a global centre for innovation where growth is clean and inclusive, the middle class prospers through more opportunities for all Canadians, and our companies become global leaders. ISED works with Canadians in all areas of the economy and in all parts of the country to improve conditions for investment, enhance Canada's innovation performance, increase Canada's share of global trade, and build a fair, efficient and competitive marketplace.
In 2018–19, ISED continued to implement several Innovation and Skills Plan initiatives, including the Innovation Superclusters Initiative, the Strategic Innovation Fund, CanCode, Connect to Innovate, and the Accelerated Growth Service. The Department also worked towards the implementation of the Digital Research Infrastructure Strategy, helped women-owned and women-led businesses scale up and reach export markets under the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy, and supported growth in Canada’s tourism sector by delivering the Canada-China Year of Tourism initiative.

Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year
Total travel:
Compared to fiscal year 2017-18, departmental travel expenditures mostly increased due to the continued implementation of Canada's Innovation and Skills Plan initiatives. This plan was developed to make Canada a world-leading centre for innovation, grow the economy and create middle class jobs.
