Department of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities 2019 - 2020

As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for Department of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020.

Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.

Mandate:

The key to building Canada for the 21st century is a strategic and collaborative long-term infrastructure plan that builds economically vibrant, strategically planned, sustainable and inclusive communities. Infrastructure Canada works closely with all orders of government and other partners to enable investments in social, green, public transit and other core public infrastructure, as well as trade and transportation infrastructure.

International travel by minister and minister's staff (included in travel)

Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year

Total travel:

Compared to fiscal year 2018-2019, departmental travel expenditures decreased slightly mainly due to the global COVID-19 pandemic which impacted travel at the end of the fiscal year.


Hospitality:

Compared to fiscal year 2018-2019, departmental expenditures related to hospitality increased slightly mainly due to Infrastructure Canada hosting the Smart Cities Challenge award ceremony in May 2019, and hosting a Federal-Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Deputy Ministers’ Retreat in August 2019.

Conference fees:

Not applicable (no significant variance)

Minister and minister’s exempt staff - International travel:

Compared to fiscal year 2018-2019, departmental expenditures related to the international travel of the Minister and exempt staff increased mainly due to meetings with international stakeholders.
