Department of Justice Canada 2023 - 2024
As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for Department of Justice Canada for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024.
Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.
Mandate:
The Department of Justice Canada supports the dual roles of the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of Canada.
Under Canada’s legal system, the administration of justice is an area of shared jurisdiction between the federal government and the provinces and territories. The Department supports the Minister of Justice’s responsibilities for statutes and areas of law that fall under federal jurisdiction by ensuring a bilingual and bijural national legal framework, principally within the following domains: criminal justice (including justice for victims of crime and youth criminal justice), family justice, access to justice, Indigenous justice, public law, and international private law. This responsibility is fulfilled through the development of laws, justice policies, programs and services for Canadians. The Minister is the legal advisor to Cabinet and ensures that the administration of public affairs is in accordance with the law.
The Department also supports the role of the Attorney General of Canada as the chief law officer of the Crown. In carrying out this role, the Attorney General represents the Crown and not individual departments and agencies and, therefore, seeks to protect interests for the whole of the Government of Canada.

Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year
Total travel:
Compared to the fiscal year 2022-23, there was an increase in departmental travel expenditures of $2,654K (58%) mainly due to the progressive resumption of normal business activities following the global Covid-19 pandemic. The return of domestic/international travel requirements related to training and operational activities in support of program delivery and in-person engagement meetings continued to gradually progress in 2023-24 towards pre-pandemic levels.
Hospitality:
Compared to the fiscal year 2022-23, there was an increase in departmental hospitality expenditures of $139K (240%) mainly due to normalized business activities and in-person stakeholder engagement activities.
Conference fees:
Compared to the fiscal year 2022-23, there was an increase in departmental conference expenditures of $16K (80%) mainly due to normalized business activities.Minister and minister’s exempt staff - International travel:
Compared to the fiscal year 2022-23, there was an increase in international travel mainly due to the resumption of normal business activities following the global Covid-19 pandemic.
