As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for The Correctional Investigator Canada for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020.
Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.
Mandate:
Expenditures on travel, hospitality, conferences and events incurred by a government organization are directly related to supporting its mandate and the government’s priorities. In particular, for the Office of the Correctional Investigator, this includes the delivery of the following core program and services to Canadians:
The Office of the Correctional Investigator provides Canadians with timely, independent, thorough and objective monitoring of their federal correctional system to ensure that it remains safe, secure, fair, humane and effective. As the Ombudsman for federal offenders, the Office receives and investigates individual and systemic complaints. Essentially, its oversight role is to ensure that the Correctional Service of Canada carries out its statutory mandate in compliance with its legal and policy framework including domestic and international human rights obligations.
The Office of the Correctional Investigator is independent of the Correctional Service of Canada and may initiate an investigation on receipt of a complaint by or on behalf of an offender, at the request of the Minister or on its own initiative. As provided for in the Corrections and Conditional Release Act, the Correctional Investigator reports annually through the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to both Houses of Parliament.
