Pacific Economic Development Canada 2022 - 2023

As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for Pacific Economic Development Canada for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2023.

Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.

Mandate:

PacifiCan’s travel, hospitality and conference expenditures support the delivery of the following core programs and services to Canadians:
• The Pacific Economic Development Canada mandate is to support the economic growth and diversification of British Columbia’s economy and advance its interests of the region in national economic policy, programs, and projects. The department will achieve this mandate by working with clients and partners in our four roles as investor, advisor, pathfinder, and convener.
• Delivery of strategic programs to Canadians that advance innovation, business development and community economic development in rural and urban areas throughout the province of British Columbia.

PacifiCan is the new federal regional development agency which was set up on August 6th 2021. The information presented in the table below reflects expenditures for the period between August 6, 2021 and March 31, 2022.

Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year

Total travel:

Compared with fiscal year 2021-2022, departmental travel expenditures increased by $422 thousand mainly due to:
• The 2021-2022 fiscal year reflects expenses from August 6, 2021 to March 31, 2022 compared to a full fiscal year of operations in 2022-2023;
• Increased operational activities, internal governance and training to deliver PacifiCan’s programs and services, to establish new regional offices, and to grow as a new agency;
• Increased travel for networking, knowledge exchange and staff training; and
• Increased stakeholder engagement to promote the advancement of economic development and Government of Canada priorities.


Hospitality:

Compared with fiscal year 2021-2022, hospitality expenditures increased by $6 thousand mainly due to:
• The 2021-2022 fiscal year reflects expenses from August 6, 2021 to March 31, 2022 compared to a full fiscal year of operations in 2022-2023;
• Facilitating collaborative approaches for priorities and activities through hospitality for stakeholder engagement in British Columbia; and
• Convening role promoting economic diversification, building on competitive regional advantages, and organizational planning.

Conference fees:

Compared with fiscal year 2021-2022, departmental conference fee expenditures increased by $22 thousand mainly due to: • The 2021-2022 fiscal year reflects expenses from August 6, 2021 to March 31, 2022 compared to a full fiscal year of operations in 2022-2023; • Increasing networking with stakeholders to promote economic diversification and PacifiCan priorities; and • Attending business growth and innovation conferences to facilitate partnership development opportunities and strengthen meaningful business relationships.
