Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year
Total travel:
For fiscal year 2024-25, Parks Canada's expenditures for travel diminished by $988,000 compared to 2023-24. This decrease is primarily explained by the exceptionally high costs of $939,000 due to wildfires in 2023-24 in the Northwest Territories, partially offset by the Jasper wildfires in 2024-25 of $517,000. The remaining variance reflects economies of scale associated with the government-wide reduction in expenses.
Hospitality:
For fiscal year 2024-25, Parks Canada's expenditures for hospitality diminished by $64,000 compared to 2023-24. Almost half of this decrease is attributable to a reduction in the number of activities and meetings related to the establishment of national marine conservation areas in 2024-25. The remaining variance reflects economies of scale associated with the government-wide reduction in expenses.
Conference fees:
For fiscal year 2024-25, Parks Canada's expenditures for conference fees diminished by $61,000 compared to 2023-2024. The variance reflects economies of scale associated with the government-wide reduction in expenses.Minister and minister’s exempt staff - International travel:
