Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year
Total travel:
Compared to fiscal year 2018-19, departmental travel expenditures decreased by approximately $2.7 million. While COVID-19 did result in reduced travel during the last quarter of the fiscal year, the primary driver of this variance for 2019-20 is the close out of the operations and activities of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) in June 2019.
Hospitality:
Compared to fiscal year 2018-19, departmental hospitality expenditures increased by $84,000. This increase is primarily as a result of expenditures incurred for the Canada Youth Summit.
Conference fees:
Compared to fiscal year 2018-19, departmental conference expenditures increased by $5,000. This increase is primarily attributable due to ongoing business operations.Minister and minister’s exempt staff - International travel:
Compared to fiscal year 2018-19, departmental expenditures for international travel by ministers and minister's staff decreased by $52,000 mainly due the fact that starting this fiscal year expenditures related to Prime Minister's international trips are going to be reported by Global Affairs Canada.
