Transport Canada 2021 - 2022

As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for Transport Canada for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2022.

Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.

Mandate:

Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by Transport Canada relate to activities that support the department’s mandate and the government’s priorities. These expenditures support the delivery of the following core programs and services to Canadians by developing and overseeing the Government of Canada’s transportation policies and programs so that Canadians can have access to a transportation system that is safe and secure, green and innovative and efficient.

Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year

Total travel:

Compared with fiscal year 2020-21, travel expenditures increased by 3.7 million dollars mainly due to the easing of travel restrictions brought on by the global pandemic. This led to the beginning of a return for regular travel requirements related to training, operational activities to support program delivery and in-person engagement meetings with stakeholders.


Hospitality:

Compared with fiscal year 2020-21, hospitality expenditures increased by 11 thousand dollars due to the department’s stakeholder engagement activities following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions.

Conference fees:

Compared with fiscal year 2020-21, conference fee expenditures increased by 74 thousand dollars mainly due to an increased participation in in-person conferences following the partial lift on Covid restrictions.

Minister and minister’s exempt staff - International travel:

International travel by the Minister and the Minister’s exempt staff increased by 24 thousand dollars in 2021-22 due to the gradual return to normal levels of engagement activities following the easing of restrictions brought on by the global pandemic.
