Annual Report on Travel, Hospitality and Conference Expenditures

Women and Gender Equality Canada 2022 - 2023

As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for Women and Gender Equality Canada for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2023.

Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.

Mandate:

WAGE’s travel, hospitality and conference expenditures support the delivery of the following core programs and services to Canadians:

The mandate of WAGE is to advance equality with respect to sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity or expression through the inclusion of people of all genders, including women, in Canada’s economic, social, and political life. This application of a gender and diversity lens will help us to understand better the intersection of sex and gender with other identity factors. These factors include – but are not limited to – race, national and ethnic origin, Indigenous origin or identity, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic condition, place of residence and disability.

Further information on mandate, roles, responsibilities and programs of WAGE can be found in the Departmental Results Report and Departmental Plan.

Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year

Total travel:

compared with fiscal year 2021-22, there was a significant increase in departmental travel expenditures. This is mainly attributable to the ease of travel restrictions related to COVID-19. As a result, there was an increase of $189K in travel for operational activities to undertake research and mobilize knowledge on gender equality and to meet with organizations to take action on the ground and to support communities. It is also explained by an increase of $313K for key stakeholders in-person meetings to continue to work closely with counterparts in provincial and territorial governments, notably through the Federal-Provincial-Territorial (FPT) Forum of Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women to advance gender equality across the country and WAGE participation and support for Canada's participation in the 67th Session of the United Nations (UNCSW 67).

Hospitality:

compared with fiscal year 2021-22, there is a significant variance in departmental hospitality expenditures. The increase is due to hospitality offered at in-person meetings to continue to work closely with counterparts in provincial and territorial governments, notably at the Federal-Provincial-Territorial (FPT) Forum of Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women to advance gender equality across the country and at side events at the 67th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW 67).

Conference fees:

compared with fiscal year 2021-22, there is no significant variance in departmental conference fees.

Minister and minister’s exempt staff - International travel:

compared with fiscal year 2021-22, there is a variance for departmental expenditures for international travel by the Minister and the Minister’s exempt staff. The increase is due to their participation and in-person attendance at the meeting of the G7 Gender Equality Ministers in Germany to discuss progress towards an equitable world.
