As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for Department of Finance Canada for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020.
Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.
Mandate:
The Department helps the Government of Canada develop and implement strong and sustainable economic, fiscal, tax, social, security, international and financial sector policies and programs. It plays an important central agency role, working with other departments to ensure that the government’s agenda is carried out and that Ministers are supported with high-quality analysis and advice.

Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year
Total travel:
In comparison to fiscal year 2018-19, departmental travel expenditures decreased by $855,000 primarily due to a pause in travel during the Federal Election period in Fall of 2019 as well as travel restrictions brought on by the global pandemic.
Hospitality:
In comparison to fiscal year 2018-19, departmental hospitality expenditures decreased by $65,000 as a result of decreased consultations with stakeholders as a result of restrictions resulting from the global pandemic.
Conference fees:
Conference fee expenditures remained relatively the same as 2018-19 levels.Minister and minister’s exempt staff - International travel:
In comparison to fiscal year 2018-19, expenditures for international travel by the Minister of Finance and the Minister’s staff decreased by $57,000, largely due to a pause in travel during the Federal Election period in Fall of 2019.
