Prairies Economic Development Canada 2020 - 2021
As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for Prairies Economic Development Canada for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2021.
Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.
Mandate:
The department is mandated to “promote the development and diversification of the economy of Western Canada and to advance the interests of the West in national economic policy, program and project development and implementation.” Delivery of strategic programs to Canadians that advance innovation, business development and community economic development in rural and urban areas throughout the four western provinces.

Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year
Total travel:
Compared with fiscal year 2019–20, departmental travel expenditures decreased by $1.1 million due to travel restrictions imposed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hospitality:
Compared with fiscal year 2019-20, departmental hospitality expenditures decreased by $36 thousand due to preventative health measures restricting in-person meeting and interactions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Conference fees:
Compared with fiscal year 2019–20, departmental conference fee expenditures decreased by $47 thousand mainly due to: • Preventative health measures limiting in-person events and conferences as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic; and • WD leading and attending conferences using virtual platforms, programming and applications.Minister and minister’s exempt staff - International travel:
