Prairies Economic Development Canada 2021 - 2022

As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for Prairies Economic Development Canada for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2022.

Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.

Mandate:

To grow and diversify the Prairie economy and advance its interests of the region in national economic policy, programs, and projects. The department will achieve this mandate by working with clients and partners in our four roles as investor, advisor, pathfinder, and convenor. Delivery of strategic programs to Canadians that advance innovation, business development and community economic development in rural and urban areas throughout the four western provinces.

Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year

Total travel:

Compared with fiscal year 2020-2021, departmental travel expenditures increased by $157 thousand mainly due to:
• Increased stakeholder engagement to promote economic development and Government of Canada priorities; and
• An increased convening role promoting economic development and assisting small and medium enterprises recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.


Hospitality:

There was no significant change in hospitality compared to fiscal year 2020-2021.

Conference fees:

Compared with fiscal year 2020-2021, departmental conference fee expenditures increased by $80 thousand mainly due to: • Strengthening meaningful business relationships as preventative health measures limiting in-person events and conferences have relaxed; and • Sponsoring and attending innovation events as investors, advisors, pathfinders, and convenors, advancing economic development across the prairies.
