Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year
Total travel:
Compared with the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019, the departmental travel expenditures variance is mainly attributable to an overall decrease in travel required to support program delivery, such as for the building and renewal of federal infrastructure projects across Canada for other government departments. Travel also decreased because of limited travel in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the non-recurrence of the G7 Summit in Charlevoix that took place in the previous fiscal year.
Hospitality:
Compared with the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019, there was no significant variance in hospitality expenditures.
Conference fees:
Compared with the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019, the departmental conference fees expenditures variance is attributable to fewer conferences held in the year.Minister and minister’s exempt staff - International travel:
There were no international travel expenditures by the Minister and Minister’s staff funded by the departmental budget in the year ended March 31, 2020.
