Grants and Contributions

About this information

In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.

The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.

Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Advancing and Scaling Up Biochar-Based Carbon-Negative Concrete Admixture from Pilot Validation to Commercial Demonstration Readiness

Agreement Number:

1041068

Duration: from Jan 1, 2026 to Jun 30, 2027
Description:

The Firm has developed ΔC, a biochar-based carbon-negative concrete admixture made from sustainably sourced wood residues that reduces cement use and permanently stores biogenic carbon, lowering concrete’s carbon footprint by 20–30% without changing plant operations.

This project advances ΔC development and manufacturing from pilot validation to commercial readiness by: 1) optimizing production, 2) completing engineering and techno-economic analysis, 3) validating industrial performance, and 4) preparing inputs for Final Investment Decision (FID).

Accelerating Commercial Deployment of Digital Aggregate and Carbon-Negative Concrete Technologies Through Customer-Facing Project Management

Agreement Number:

1033960

Duration: from Aug 1, 2025 to Mar 15, 2026
Description:

This project supports the hiring of a customer-facing Project Manager to accelerate the commercial deployment of the firm's Digital Aggregate technology and carbon-negative concrete admixture. The role focuses on coordinating field trials, supporting product implementation, and gathering customer feedback to optimize performance and adoption. By enabling real-time aggregate analysis and carbon-negative admixtures, the project contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the construction industry while promoting innovation and sustainable infrastructure.

Scaling up and Optimizing Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream Processes for Production of Hydrous Bio-Graphene Oxide (hBGO) Admixture from Wood Biochar for Decarbonization of Concrete

Agreement Number:

1026387

Duration: from Dec 1, 2024 to Nov 30, 2025
Description:

This IRAP R&D project proposal focuses on developing an innovative and groundbreaking bio-graphene based admixture for decarbonizing concrete. Hydrous Bio-Graphene Oxide (hBGO) is made via pyrolysis of softwood lumber residues followed by surfactant-assisted liquid phase exfoliation of stable dispersions of graphene oxide nanoplatelets and micronized biochar.
Subprojects include development and testing of optimal solutions for sustainable biochar production (upstream), biochar exfoliation into bio-graphene oxide (midstream), and the integration of hBGO into concrete mixtures for low-carbon applications (downstream).
