Royal Canadian Mounted Police 2018 - 2019

As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for Royal Canadian Mounted Police for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019.

Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.

Mandate:

The RCMP's mandate, as outlined in section 18 of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Act, is multi-faceted. It includes preventing and investigating crime; maintaining peace and order; enforcing laws; contributing to national security; ensuring the safety of state officials, visiting dignitaries and foreign missions; and providing vital operational support services to other police and law enforcement agencies within Canada and abroad.

Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year

Total travel:

Compared with fiscal year 2017-2018, departmental travel expenditures increased by $7.3 million in 2018-2019. This increase primarily relates to expenditures incurred in providing security for the 2018 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Charlevoix, Québec. Other reasons for the increase include: rural crime reduction in Alberta and Saskatchewan, relief unit costs, new service delivery models in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, federal operational investigations related to national security and financial crime and core mandate delivery within Contract Policing.


Hospitality:

Compared with fiscal year 2017-2018, departmental hospitality expenditures increased by $0.15 million in 2018-2019. This increase primarily relates to the 2018 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Charlevoix, Québec.

Conference fees:

Compared with fiscal year 2017-2018, departmental conference fees increased by $0.08 million in 2018-2019, keeping in line with Government-wide efficiency initiatives.
